Mother-In-Law as Nanny: Can it work?

'Trapped in Podunk' writes "My Mother in law wants to be my nanny and I'm not even pregnant yet! (Just trying) I know that it will be cheaper than daycare, but I really don't want her raising my kids."  I pointed out to her that her Mother in law theoretically did a fine job raising her husband, but she is full of anxiety none the less.  Anyone out there using MIL as Nanny? Babyproofing

My mother in law has amnesia. She claims to not have baby proofed her house at all when her (4) kids were toddlers. I simply do not believe her. We go to her house and she has a bowl of MARBLES on the coffee table, ready for my toddler to swallow. She was a nurse, her husband a pediatrician. She has glass vases on the floor! Not to mention knives in accessible drawers. Honestly, she said she just taught her children not to touch her things. I DO NOT BELIEVE HER....

Anna writes to disagree: "I was raised in a house where my mother didn't remove breakables. We learned at an early age that when Mommy said NO, she really meant it....When my children were babies, I had the outlets covered and the cabinets hooked, but as far as glass vases etc, they stayed where they were and the kids knew I meant business."
